today was the second day of my painting course and i like it. i've heard from peers & friends that the professor is a hard marker but that only pushes me to work harder. He seems very nice though, very good at constructive critisicm which i like. i know it may sound out but i do like hearing what im doing wrong (in art, writing, living) but in a positive way. it helps me catch those flaws and mess ups and quickly fix them so i can improve. cause if one doesn't hear, know, or even see what the problem is how are they ever going to fix it? just my opinion. anyways that went off in another direction hah. todays class was different, we did a technique i've never done before. but then again this only the second class in painting i've taken so my techniques don't range very much since most of it was self taught. we spent the entire class positioning the figure on our canvas with charcoal and erasing it and tweaking it again with charcoal till the proporations were correct. then we use Gesso (a white paint for priming the canvas and keeping it clean-i think?) to add white. it was a bit difficult. cause it was a mixture of painting and drawing which i've never done before. usually i paint or a draw not both combined. the most challenging part was that we had make sure the gesso covered the charcoal or else when we start painting next week the paint will become muddy cause of the powder from the charcoal. the only reason why i found it challenging was because we had to keep ' the whites white, and the blacks black' but if i added gesso to the charcoal it would make it gray. so i just kept it gray. id rather be able to define the black while i paint then maybe have it go muddy on me and ruin the painting. Also happy i dropped my writing course- although my mom thinks i made a foolish mistake. the novel i would have wrote would have gone in a different direction (been more on a downer side then inspiring).
and i believe i've made a couple friends, not that im one who makes it a deal to have more friends. i'm fine in my solitude for classes or work because well im there to learn and work and i already have friends. but it's nice when you meet people you don't have to fake a conversation with. one is a guy from painting course over a year ago (i thought everyone else would have been long gone) it seems as though he took a semester off to work also. his easel is next to mine so while our model takes a break from the pose i'll glance over and be like 'why did i choose to work next you?' he's truly gifted. but it's real neat seeing how we're all painting the same thing, but they all look so different. oh and then there is a girl that was in my drawing course waaay back and she was nice enough to help me find and photocopy something for our intro to visual cultures class- im pretty challenged with our school library. well more rusty lets say. and then there's a guy named tarrot (like tarrot cards) and he's a tattoo artist which is sweet because he said if i have any questions about tattoo prices, colours and styles to ask him. i think i may get him to do the two tattoos i've been wanting. because they'd be waaaaay cheaper and he uses pure pigment (not that id be getting coloured ink beside black or white but still).
oh and funny story. on the way to school the bus got stuck just past the bottom of a hill. so we had to wait till the next bus came along (which was 30 minutes). only thing is i felt bad for our bus driver who had to stay there...but it was kinda funny to see everyone get off one bus and bored the one adjacent to us. actually that's kinda the second time that happens to me this week. last thursday i got stuck in a cart in the skytrain...odd
oh dang...just realised i have homework to finish hah...
